About Almere

History

Almere welcomed its first residents in November 1976 but its history goes back much further than that. Remains have even been found of fish catches and hunting activities from 10,000 years ago. Almere (Aelmere) is named after the lake which became the Zuiderzee following later expansions, and still lies entirely below sea level (2-5 metres). Following reclamation in the 1940s, the idea arose in 1958, based on the plan of Dr Cornelis Lely, to build a new city which would serve the housing needs of Amsterdam and 't Gooi. Almere now has more than 206,284 inhabitants (as of 1 September 2018) and is currently one of the 7 largest municipalities in the Netherlands. Given that it is also one of the fastest growing cities in the Netherlands, Almere will soon be one of the Top 5 and will have 350,000 residents by 2030.

Today

Almere has been structured as a multi-polar city and comprises six districts, each with its own facilities and centre, namely Almere Stad, Haven, Buiten, Hout, Poort and Pampus. Each district has its own atmosphere and identity. Almere Stad is further subdivided into Almere Stad Oost (comprising Filmwijk, Verzetswijk, Parkwijk, Danswijk and Tussen de Vaarten), Almere Stad West (comprising Noorderplassen, Muziekwijk, Stedewijk, Staatsliedenwijk, Literatuurwijk and Kruidenwijk) and the Stads/Zakencentrum (City/Business Centre).

In addition to its districts, Almere also has a large number of office/industrial sites. Thanks to its diversity of sites, Almere offers large-scale establishment opportunities on logistical and industrial sites in addition to small-scale locations in inner-city or high-value locations. An overview of all the office/industrial sites is given below.
